Australian born, Indonesia based, Kerensa Dewantoro has a passion for theatre that is insatiable spurred by a fascination of Antonin Artaud and his travels. He study of and work in theater has taken her throughout Asia and to Europe and though she studied Balinese Topeng for 12 years, her performances are not dictated by any one style. She has a background in Topeng, West Sumatran Randai, Indian Dance. Her contemporary work is influenced by the theories of Eugenio Barba, Antonin Artaud and Grotowski. She leads workshops in cross cultural theater practise, devising theater and mask characterization for actors. She conceived Cooking Murder; Menjahit Marat Sade; You and Me Artaud, Red Room and her play “ ell Laura” was presented at Women Playwrights International Conference in Sweden in 2012. She has performed with various groups in Indonesia including Teater Cassanova, Keluarga Teater, Gamelan Gunung Sahari amongst others.
“ The struggle in her story and the struggle as performer in telling it combined the best elements of Grotowski and Artaud. The actor sacrifice herself for a total theater.” Catherine Hassall, Centre for Australasian Theater Studies.
